The Unforgetable KK trip

A hell lot happened in the last 5 days.

19th July - Arrived at KK. It was my first time there, so I didn't expect much. When I landed, the airport looked run down...no aircon, no proper infrastructure, signs to taxi stand were misleading, etc...and I thought, "How am I gonna survive for another 4 days in this kampung?". But to my surprise, the town was completely different!

20th July - Met up with friends from Singapore, KK and Miri. Had lunch at a famous ngao lum meen restaurant. When the sun went down, we ordered room service dinner where we had lamb chop, salmon, salad, fish & chips and the best local delicacies - nasi goreng and nasi lemak. Later that night, we (the party-goers haha) visited one of KK's top nightspots, Shenanigan, located at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, where we had Johnnie Walker Swing all the way...one bottle after another. And needless to say, what I had for dinner, ended up in the toilet bowl.

Drunk? I think so!!

21st July - Off to Pulau Sapi. A very small island but alot to offer.

Joanne: Waitttt, I wasn't ready

Sergeant Major (?) we saw while snorkelling

High up in the air

Fighting against gravity

Sea-walked 6m under

Fishes up closed

Speeding on a banana boat

Wynie and I anticipating adrenaline rush on a flyfish

Holding onto our dear life

Alaister and Joyce

Eh??? Where's Joyce?

Our record holder, Joyce, for falling off the flyfish

The finale, Jet Ski, wrapping up our day out at Pulau Sapi.

On the same night, we partied at one of the biggest dance clubs in Sabah, The Bed. It has a unique warehouse-style concept. We had our own private suite room there, with a pool table and more Johnnie Walker Swing and Black Label.

22nd July - Chilled out at Le Royal Club lounge, Le Meridien where we stayed. The lounge has a very paradise-y feel to it, overlooking the Sutera Harbour Resort, comfortable leather lounges, LCD TV, internet access and etc. And the best thing...as privileged guests, we get everything FREE + their dedicated service...at a cost of RM650++ per night!
Coincidently, it was also the French wine and cheese festival...where they featured wines from France, Australia and Chile....and lots of cheese!

As a not-so-fond-of-cheese person, I settled for Boursin to go with my Chilean wine. With a good glass of wine, the superb sea view, and good companies...it felt like paradise!

That same night, we dined at Port View Seafood Village - 3kg fish, flower crab, steamed prawns, and few dishes of mouth-watering clam families. YUM!!!

After dinner and after 2 nights of hardcore clubbing, we subsided to a Latin bar, Rumba, to enjoy the Latin life.

Enjoying my glass of Margarita

23rd July - 9 o'clock flight back to Brunei...and guess what? We f&@king missed it!!! For the first time, I experienced the 'Amazing Race' adventure...running around the airport looking for ticketing offices to catch another flight home on the same day. Silk Air, Air Asia, Dragon Air, Royal Brunei Airline, MAS Airline. They either did not have flights on the same day, connecting flights which could not be connected or fully booked. We decided to purchase one-way ticket from MAS Airline, and waited patiently (not so!) at the stand-by counter hoping that some passengers would not turn up....and God blessed us!

Phew....what a trip! A big THANK YOU to James & Joanne.

I'm now looking forward to my next adventure with best mates, and brothers. MELBOURNE, here I come... =)

Open Water Diver

Wooohoooo I'm a certified open water diver now! What does that mean? I can: -
1) Dive independently (within my training limits of course)
2) Procure filled tanks and scuba equipments and
3) Plan, conduct and log open water no stop dives with a buddy.

Oh, and I'm also one step closer to being a Course Director! And in between, there are Adventure Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Master Scuba Diver, Divermaster, Emergency First Response Instructor, Assistant Instructor, Open Water Scuba Instructor, Specialty Instructor, Master Scuba Diver Trainer, IDC Staff Instructor, and Master Instructor....

Really can't imagine the time and effort (and $$$) I have to put through, and the responsibilities I have to handle...so I'm just gonna enjoy diving and continue with Adventure/Advanced Open Water diver course when I'm ready =).

P/S: Can someone recommend to me a good/effective whitening cream...please?

Anyone seen my snorkel?

8.30 in the morning, the 8 of us set off at Jerudong Beach to our dive site, Little Dale. Boat ride was rough, but that didn't put me off... the seasick pill I took helped alot.

Water was very green, we prepared ourselves to face poor visibility. And true enough, it was. While descending, I could see nothing but greenish water and bubbles from my instructor's exhalation. My camera was sad too! 12m-15m down, it got better, and I managed to take some (clear) pics.

The Blue tangs I've always wanted to keep in my aquarium

The clown fish we never failed to see

Don't know what this is, but it looks like it has 4 eyes

Humongous star fell from the sky

Look how bad the visibility was!

An hour later, I took my second plunge. Same dive site, same visibility, but this time, a stronger current. I kicked my hardest against it, fought it, and 28 mins later, war was over... and it took my snorkel with it. I BLOODY LOST MY SNORKEL!!! *cry*

It was still on me when I was meditating

Snorkel, don't worry, I'll find you during my next dive! I promiseeeee...

Disappointed?

Scheduled dive this morning was cancelled due to forecasted bad weather, and poor visibility underwater.

I was happily defogging my mask, packing my gearbag and installing my camera into the marine pack when the phone rang. Instructor called to postpone dive to tomorrow. According to the boatman, if weather is bad today, it should be fine the next day. And the logic? ....*blank* I'll ask him tomorrow.

Here's a pic to add abit of content to this post: -

An Inconvenient Truth

Last weekend, HSBC sponsored us to an award-winning documentary film at the Mall Cineplex...An Inconvenient Truth. It was a truly inspiring film, presented by Al Gore. His presentation style, slide shows, illustrations, and humour... captured my attention throughout.

In the film, he tried to convey how much global warming could do: -
i) pictures of glaciers, the before and after
ii) record high temperature positively corelated to carbon dioxide concentration
iii) polar bears drowning as ice melts away
iv) re-generation of "old" diseases, and "new" ones evolving
v) the catastrophe of hurricane Katrina (just when you thought it was a NATURAL disaster)
and etc etc (my memory fails me sometimes).

But the one part which I he mentioned, and which was related to the theme of this blog, was the effect it has on corals. With rising global temperatures, the survival of these delicate corals becomes threatening. In the film, Gore showed photographs of living corals, and dead corals....I recalled seeing some of them during my dive. It didn't occur to me, at first, but now I know they were human-caused.

Imagine you're on a beautiful tropical island, water is clear, sea is calm, you put on your gears and jump into the water. Instead of seeing brightly coloured corals, and fish, all you see are dead corals.

I'm going to do my part NOW, no matter how minimal, to save the environment... when will you?

Birthday prezzies

For as long as I could remember, I've never really wished for anything specific for my birthday. But this year, I gave my friends a general idea of what I had in mind, and they (he) completely nailed it !!!

Gear Bag

Mask, snorkel and gloves

Bootie and fins

Hey, hang on....I'm still missing some essential gears - BCD, regulator, weight belt, and wet suit. Next birthday?!?!? =P

P/S: The fresh fruit cream cake from Sheraton Hotel was YUMMMMMM =9

First Dive

Mask, snorkel, bootie, fins, BCD, regulator, octopus, tank, seasick pill.....and i'm ready to go....

My first plunge

Had a 5 hr practical session at JPMC pool a few weeks ago, and I must say that diving out at sea was COMPLETELY different - the current, the wave, the depth, etc. I panicked when equipping myself on the surface, gulping salty sea water =s.

Dolphins we saw during our surface interval - v. v. v. lucky to see them on my first dive!

Went for 2nd dive, and it was much better. I knew what to expect, and had better control of my bouyancy and ear equalisation.

Holding onto a coral to fight against the surge

Had a few cut from the corals, but it was all worth it =)

Does this say it all?

Looking forward to my next dive in 2 weeks time *fingers crossed*

On a side note, my friend felt funny in the stomach before his first dive and guess what...He took a dump in the sea!
